Yeah, if Ed was hungry he'd just be like "gimme food, man". I think even at his current age in the manga (seventeen?) his safety whiskers could be compromised by hunger. And he's a fast eater, too, so if he was smart enough to work out something was up, it might be too late. I'm not sure how rapidly tranquilisers/sedatives in food would work, but I'm sure you've got this worked out already. Dr H guesses half an hour? Does that throw a spanner in the works re. Ed, or did you come up with something that'd work faster?
On a related note, I do like coming up with fun street foods for him to try. In the first draft of NSI 2 I believe he considered a pasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasty), and then enemy was all "what is a pasty?" and I realised that you guys don't have them and many would be confused. They're nice, but an awesome way to get food poisoning. I bet with all that eating on the run, poor Al had to nurse Ed through a couple of bouts of food poisoning in crappy hotels over the years. At least he didn't have a sense of smell at the time?
