I imagined the formality coming later, a boundary line which arrived when they were refashioning their relationship with each other after the 'shoot me if I step off the path' deal. In NSI, Roy and Riza are friends on first-name terms, and so I was trying to imagine how they might have started to get to that place. - As I said to flybynight00, this fic also gave me a much-needed opportunity to give Hakuro some dimensions. Because he's a major antagonist in this 'verse, and besides his opposition to Roy's noble goals, does various horrid things, I wanted the reader to be able to see to some extent where he's coming from and to make him more than a cardboard cut-out villain. Your Bush quote is about on the money, although by the time of TPW, I think Hakuro has veered more from misguided towards really rotten.
